This is a wine crafted for the serious Riesling lover. Made from grapes handpicked from a single block of vines planted in 1978, it reflects our passion for growing and making fine Riesling. Without a doubt this wine expresses our vineyard's sense of place.
Intense aromas of lime and lemon with a hint of tropical fruit leap from the glass. On the palate, pineapple, melon and citrus flavours envelope the tongue. It sings with balance and focus while displaying a depth of character only mature vines can create. Naturally high acidity accentuates its wonderful food pairing possibilities. Those patient enough to cellar this wine will be rewarded.
The 2009 growing season was our most challenging to date with severe cold temperatures during the winter which resulted in very low crop levels. This was followed by blistering heat during the summer and a snap frost right at harvest which meant the Old Vines Riesling grapes were picked within 24 hours to maintain pristine freshness. Like all of our wines, the fruit was 100% estate grown and organically farmed.
Field 5 produces grapes with intense aromatics and lush stone fruit and tropical citrus flavours. We handpicked the grapes into 30 pound bins and very gently whole bunch pressed them to maintain flavor integrity. The juice settled naturally and was then fermented in steel tanks at very cool temperatures to enhance fruit character. The wine was aged for several months on natural lees and was bottled on March 2, 2010.
At Tantalus, we strive to craft wines that reflect our unique terroir and boundless passion.
