Riesling Icewine 2010

Tantalus icewine is a special gift born out of chilly winter weather.

In the glass it shows a deep golden hue. A divine array of aromas including citrus zest, fresh cut flowers and top notes of liquid honey waft from the glass.

The palate is awash with dried peach, candied-orange zest and fresh lemon curd. Racy acidity is indicative of our vineyard and this gives the wine its balance and length. A crescendo of caramelized pineapple flavours carries through the finish.

Picking took place at 6:30 a.m. on November 22nd with the temperature holding steady at a frosty -17°C. An unusually cool Arctic front brought temperatures down overnight and gave us one of the earliest icewine picks on record in the Okanagan Valley. The frozen grapes we pressed over several hours and a tiny yield of 290 litres of intensely sweet juice was extracted. Ferment took place over several months with the finished wine going into bottle on March 17th, 2011.

The 2010 growing season was a challenging one for our viticulturist. An early bud break meant we were off to a good start. A month long patch of cold weather slowed growth, followed by rain during the flowering phase which resulted in naturally low yields. Sunshine and warm temperatures in July allowed the vines to catch up slightly but a cooler August and September slowed ripening down again. This gradual ripening produced outstanding intensity in the fruit.

Like all of our wines, this icewine was sustainably grown and vinified at our single vineyard estate in South East Kelowna.
