Pale yellow in colour, and so immediately deep and expressive in the glass with aromas of clementine, spun sugar and jasmine, complemented by hints of wet stone. The palate is all about citrus and minerality. It’s juicy and fresh with notes of lemon tart, and a complex myriad of stone and tropical fruits. Great balance and complexity, a result of spending two years in bottle before release.
Block 5 sits on a north slope of deep, silty soils. This two-acre block is bordered by a mature Ponderosa pine forest on its western edge - which offers dappled late afternoon and evening sun exposure.
The fruit was handpicked at optimal ripeness and inoculated after a short settling period. It was then fermented to almost dry, leaving just over 4 grams of residual sweetness and a naturally high dry extract to balance the bright acidity we see year after year from this unique site. Although delicious now, its long cellaring capability will richly reward those who wait.

After a cold winter with high snowfall, the growing season got off to a slower start compared to seasonal averages. True bud break took place during the first week of May; slightly later than seasonal averages. In contrast, the summer was hotter than average and sunny days made up for the late spring.Although smoke haze from regional fires was present during parts of summer in 2017, it actually mitigated hot temperatures. The result was a slowing of the ripening phase, preventing sugar from accumulating too quickly over such a hot period. We did not see any resulting smoke taint in our wines.
