2016 Chardonnay

We admit to a special reverence for Chardonnay and each vintage we aim to create something truly memorable from our small parcels of Chardonnay fruit.

A lovely pale lemon in colour, with core aromas of toasted hazelnut, lemon and orchard fruit complemented by top notes of white flowers and flint. The palate carries a luscious weight with hints of peach and caramelized popcorn. This richness is balanced beautifully by bright Granny Smith apple and a juicy amount of minerality and acidity, stretching and lengthening the wine and hinting at its serious ageability. A light oak character from time spent in French barrel adds a lovely complexity and depth.

Block 6 Chardonnay sits on an eastern aspect in the northern portion of our vineyard. It consists of 1985 Oppenheim plantings and a younger component of Dijon clones, planted in 2007. The 2016 fruit was picked during a handful of days in mid-September with sugar levels falling between 21.8 and 23.0 brix.

The wine underwent 100% wild fermentation in 30% new French oak puncheons and barriques.

The 2016 growing season started off quickly. Budbreak was record breaking and the ensuing Spring growth was rapid. Despite the early start to the season, cooling summer rains soon arrived and slowed growth down to a more normal pace.

Late summer and early fall turned warm and sunny once again, but with cooler than usual evenings the fruit was able to ripen evenly despite the warm daytime temperatures. The 2016 harvest kept us on our toes with a long, drawn out ripening phase and gave us one of the longest harvest windows to date.

With a series of warm growing seasons behind us, our dedication to thoughtfully promote a healthy, balanced vineyard is paramount. Organic nutrient additions and precise canopy and irrigation management all play a vital role. In addition, we continue to farm as sustainably as possible – without the use of herbicides or pesticides. Our honey bee apiary is thriving and we’re amazed at the diversity of resident species that can be found on our property – a true testament for us to the health of our site.
