2023 Syrah - Further Afield Series

Our Further Afield Series has emerged out of a desire for our winemaking team to explore British Columbia’s most revered varieties, beyond our vineyard borders. Sourced from compelling sites but crafted with a Tantalus perspective.

We’ve long been drawn to Syrah in BC as a variety that can deliver plenty of depth and character while still retaining freshness and definition, so it was a natural first choice for this series. This vintage pours a deep crimson, with crushed pink peppercorns, blackberry and purple flowers emerging from the glass upon its first splash.

A dusting of black olive, red licorice and blood orange adds intrigue, while hints of cured meat and fresh tobacco linger in the background, helping to complete the aromatic profile. The palate is smooth and fresh, and rich with red fruits: cranberry and pomegranate juxtaposed with blackberry and cherry compote through the mid-palate. The finish is warm and long, with a lovely fresh, black pepper quality.

WINEMAKER'S NOTES

Sourced from a certified-organic vineyard in Osoyoos farmed by the Sekhon Family, the terroir of this site is remarkably dierent from our East Kelowna home vineyard, only two hours north. With more growing degree potential and sandier soils yet at lower elevation, the fruit has the opportunity to gain complexity and reach full ripening potential eortlessly. Separate small batches of fruit were vinified, each one fermented wild at slightly dierent temperatures with up to 15% whole cluster inclusion.

The wine was then pressed and settled to French oak barriques (10% new oak). Further élevage took place in barrel for 11 months of maturing before racking and a gentle filtration. The wine was then bottled in the fall of 2024 allowing ample bottle time to develop further complexity before its release.

Only 150 cases made.
